We have a new retired number. We haven’t done this in a while, but as we mentioned we don’t just give these out. Crackpot Press is very strict on our criteria. It took us months to agree on this one. Well, it took us months to find the right pairing. A crackpot is a rare breed and we don’t want to cheapen the process.
For George Carlin, we bestow number 36, the same as Gaylord Perry.
Perry was known for throwing the spitter or spit ball. His rituals on the mound distracted and frustrated his opponents. Batters never quite knew if he was throwing at them or to them. Carlin was known for doing the same, throughout his career he spit (verbally, anyways) into the face his opponents. He played the game of a Borsht Belt comedian until he could take it no more. That’s when he started throwing harder, spittier. In both cases it paid off.
Perry also changed teams a lot and doctored a lot of balls. Carlin twisted what was then “the establishment” then threw at the hippies. They both had elongated careers, rare for comedians and pitchers. Until his death Carlin was regular on Fox News and Bill Mahr, didn’t care he would take on any team.
